I really like this ‘fan art’ project inspired by one of my favorite bands: Alvvays Their dreamy and vibrant jangle pop sound, influenced by the 80s, has a way of transporting me to best moments in my life: The exciting novelty of my first year at university. The endless summer nights that followed. The new friendships built with classmates over games of ping-pong or watching the Euros 2016 on bar terraces. It reminds me of that girl I definitely should’ve asked out but never did... And even evokes surreal images of moments that never happened. Though released in 2014, their debut album encapsulates the charm of a bygone era and a dreamlike mood, like a rare find in an old record store, both nostalgic and a little surreal. To me, Alvvays’ music feels like stepping into the pages of a mid-20th-century romantic comic and to evoke this feeling, I drew inspiration from vintage comics, incorporating bold layouts, textured speech bubbles, halftone patterns, and scanned panels.
The following designs were created as a sort of fan-made promotional material and goodies collection for Party Police and Red Planet, two standout tracks from Alvvays’ debut album and two of my personal favorites.
